Turkey has the fifth largest grape growing area in the world, but only 5% is used in winemaking. The two main regions in the west, Marmara and the Aegean decided to base their production on international varieties such as Sauvignon and Syrah (Shiraz) whilst the central regions focus on indigenous varieties. The main grape varieties are Okuzgozu, Syrah, Bogazkere. Sultaniye, Emir and Narince.
