Recently becoming the leading wine producer in Italy. The region around Venice is known for Prosecco, the most famous of Italy’s sparkling wines.
The town of Prosseco is only 5km from the Slovenian Border (in the Trieste Province) it lends it’s name to white variety of grape and the wine made with it. The local government decided in order to avoid confusion to rechristen the variety ‘Glera’ in 2009. Another source of regional pride is Amarone, shooting to the forefront due to its unique method of production, allowing the grapes to over ripen on the vine, then allowing them to dry out naturally in a process known as passerillage. The main Varieties are Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara and Garganega, Glera, Trebbiano di Romagna.
